St. George Death Records

St. George death records are handled by the East Baton Rouge Parish Clerk of Court in Baton Rouge, since the City of St. George does not have its own vital records office. One of the newest incorporated cities in Louisiana, St. George was formally established in 2019, but vital records for its residents still run through the parish clerk just as they do for Central and other East Baton Rouge communities.

St. George Death Records - City Incorporation and Vital Records

It is worth understanding what incorporation actually changes when it comes to vital records. When St. George became a city in 2019, residents gained local control over things like zoning, city services, and their own police force. What did not change is how death records work. Vital records in Louisiana are governed by state law and managed at the parish level. A city -- new or old -- does not get its own vital records database just because it incorporates.

So St. George residents follow the same process as Baton Rouge residents, as Central residents, and as everyone else in East Baton Rouge Parish. The clerk's office on St. Louis Street is the one office for death certificates covering the post-2012 period. There is no shortcut and no alternative local office in St. George itself.

St. George Death Records - Eligibility Requirements

Louisiana is a closed-record state. Under R.S. 40:41, death records are confidential for 50 years from the year of death. Only people with a qualifying family relationship to the deceased can request a certified copy during that window.

Eligible requestors include the surviving spouse (with a marriage certificate), adult children, parents, siblings, grandparents, grandchildren, legal guardians with a court-issued custody judgment, named insurance beneficiaries, and authorized succession representatives. A notarized letter does not qualify someone as a legal guardian -- the clerk needs an actual court judgment.

Bring a valid photo ID every time you go to the clerk's office. Depending on your relationship to the deceased, you may need to bring additional paperwork. A marriage certificate for a spouse, a birth certificate for a child or parent, or a court order for a legal guardian. If you are unsure what you need, call (225) 389-3950 before going to the office. It is a practical step that can save you a wasted trip.

The same three statutes apply here as in every Louisiana parish and city. R.S. 40:32 defines what a vital record is. R.S. 40:40 sets the fees -- $26 at the parish clerk and $7 at the state vital records office. R.S. 40:41 closes records for 50 years and creates criminal penalties for anyone who lies to obtain a death certificate. Those penalties include fines up to $10,000 and prison time up to five years.
