Who Can Request Concordia Death Certificates

Death records less than 50 years old are closed records in Louisiana under R.S. 40:41. The law limits who can request a certified copy. Eligible requesters include the surviving spouse, parents of the deceased, children, siblings, grandparents, grandchildren, legal guardians who can provide a certified custody judgment, insurance beneficiaries, succession representatives, and attorneys who submit the request on official letterhead with their bar roll number. Funeral directors may request a death certificate within one year of the date of death.

Once 50 years pass from the date of death, the record becomes publicly available. At that point, anyone can request a copy through the State Archives or use the free online index. If you do not qualify as an eligible requester for a recent death, you may need an attorney or a succession representative to obtain the record on your behalf.
