Calcasieu Parish Death Records

Calcasieu Parish death records are issued exclusively at the West Calcasieu office in Sulphur -- not at the main Lake Charles courthouse. If you go to the Lake Charles location looking for a death certificate, staff will send you to Sulphur. That is an important detail that can save you a trip. Deaths covered go back to July 9, 2012; anything before that date requires a request through the Louisiana Vital Records Registry in New Orleans.

Calcasieu Parish Death Certificates - West Calcasieu Office Only

The Calcasieu Parish Clerk of Court, H. Lynn Jones II, operates the parish clerk's main office in Lake Charles on Ryan Street. But death certificates are only issued at the West Calcasieu/Sulphur Annex -- the Lake Charles main office does not process them. This is not a minor procedural note; the clerk's office states it clearly: "Birth/Death Certificates may only be obtained at our West Calcasieu Office located in Sulphur, LA" and "Birth/Death Certificates are NOT issued at the Lake Charles location."

Calcasieu Parish Death Records - Payment and ID Requirements

The Calcasieu Parish Clerk has specific payment rules for death certificates that you need to know before you go. Cash is the only accepted payment. No checks, no money orders, and no bills over $20. Bring exact change or small bills if possible.

You must also bring valid photo ID. Accepted forms include a current driver's license, state-issued ID, military ID, or passport. Staff will use professional judgment when processing requests and will refuse if the request appears fraudulent. The clerk's office states directly that they will decline requests they suspect are not legitimate.

The fee is $26.00 per certified copy. Death certificates are usually available to the office about 30 days after the date of death. If you come in too soon after a death, the record may not yet be in the system.

Who Can Get a Calcasieu Parish Death Certificate

Louisiana is a closed-record state under R.S. 40:41. Death records stay confidential for 50 years from the year of death, and only specific people can request them.

Eligible requesters in Calcasieu Parish include: the deceased's mother, father, current legal spouse (who must show a marriage license), children, grandparents, and siblings. If you are a legal guardian, you must present an original certified court custody document -- not a notarized copy. Beneficiaries named on an insurance policy must show the original policy. Anyone who provides false information on a death certificate application can face up to $10,000 in fines or five years in prison under state law.
